“The Black Mountains” is based on a trek I made in January to the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons range, on the border between England and Wales. The cold, quiet majesty of those magnificent mountains left such an impression on me that I had to create this audio document to try to process the experience, and to convey the sense of ethereal gravity and profound isolation that I felt.
I’ve decided to release “The Black Mountains” exclusively on tape, it won’t be streaming on Bandcamp or anywhere else. I think tape is the most appropriate format not only in terms of how it sounds, but also because it lends itself to pressing play and getting lost in the experience, for better or worse, without the ability to skip around tracks at will. It’s forcing the listener’s hand, in a sense, but that seemed appropriate to conveying the feeling of surrendering to the mercy of nature and the elements.
There’s a few track titles and a dedication written in Welsh on the back of the tape inlay. I hope any Welsh speakers will forgive my rudimentary understanding of the language. For this outsider, there’s not many languages that instantly transport you to the realm of myths and legends in the way that Welsh does, and it is genuinely exciting to see its prevalence as a living language today.
Thanks to the rather elusive team at Tumbril’s Wedge for releasing “The Black Mountains” on tape as their first ever offering.
Finally, many thanks to all of you for listening, and remember: bundle up before you go wandering around the Black Mountains.
